The Dark Knight Returns to the Cardington Airship Sheds

There has been much speculation as to where The Dark Knight Rises will be filming when it starts production in 2011; New Orleans being the major rumor, with some sites even going as far as to “confirm” that to be true. However, not too long ago our pals over at Hero Complex sent out a tweet officially killing that rumor, denouncing it as a “total myth.” With the New Orleans filming theories officially in a casket, we are once again left with the question; Where will The Dark Knight Rises be filming?

The answer seems simple because it is. Christopher Nolan’s last installment in his Batman saga will make its return to the Cardington airship sheds in Bedfordshire, England. Both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight filmed in the enormous hangers there, as did Nolan’s most recent cinematic outing, Inception. According to Variety, Chris and team will be returning to the United Kingdom to finish the Batman story, as well as to take advantage of the tax credits offered there. The airship sheds were home to many vast sets in the series, including ‘the narrows’ and the batcave. Perhaps a new batcave will be one of the new sets built inside the hangers? One can hope.

It’s probably safe to assume that production will also return to Chicago, the real life American city that often doubled for Gotham in Nolan’s films. Filming isn’t said to begin until May of next year, but Variety‘s David S. Cohen sent out a funny tweet last night saying that Nolan told him that his script is due tomorrow (Monday) or else he’s in big trouble! Nolan was no doubt being tongue-in-cheek, but nonetheless I am a tiny bit surprised the script is demanded of him. Now all we need is someone to tell us what is in it! I guess we’ll just have to wait, but I suppose an official announcement from Warner Bros. could crop up in the next month or so. Until then…

Thanks to Shindler2010 in the forums for the tip.

Inception Gets 4 Golden Globe Nominations

goldenglobes Inception Gets 4 Golden Globe Nominations

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 68th Golden Globe Awards this morning, which included 4 nominations for Inception. Nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score; Inception is tied with Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan in amount of nominations, and behind The Social Network and The Fighter, which have 6 nominations each, and The King’s Speech‘s 7 total nominations. To a little surprise there are no acting nominations for Inception, but to be honest, the winners for those categories are practically a lock. Our buddies over at the Hero Complex twitter say that Christopher is excited about the nominations, although under the weather at the moment and currently scouting for locations in Asia for The Dark Knight Rises. Seems like Christopher is keeping focused the future.

Congratulations to Christopher Nolan and team on the nominations. We (obviously) are pulling for you! The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be aired live on NBC Sunday January 16, 2011 at 8pm EST/5pm PST.

Memento 10th Anniversary Blu-Ray Available for Pre-Order

memento 10year Memento 10th Anniversary Blu Ray Available for Pre Order

Ten years after it confounded audiences and inspired debate, Memento will receive a 10th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray on February 22, 2011 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Originally released on Blu-ray by Sony in 2006, the distribution rights for Memento were secured by Lionsgate earlier this year following their acquisition of Newmarket Films. Since Sony’s Memento Blu-ray only utilized a 25GB disc and an inferior MPEG-2 codec, the all-new high definition transfer (approved by Christopher Nolan) for this Lionsgate release is quite exciting. Special features on the disc remain nearly identical to the previous Blu-ray release and include an audio commentary with Christopher Nolan, director’s script, the original short story Memento, and “Anatomy of a Scene.” The new addition will be a featurette with Christopher Nolan discussing the legacy of the film.

Memento’s 10th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray is now available for pre-order on Amazon for only $13.99.

Christian Bale & Michael Caine Talk The Dark Knight Rises

caine and bale Christian Bale & Michael Caine Talk The Dark Knight Rises

While doing a recent round of promotions for his upcoming film The Fighter, Christian Bale was pushed to speak about the upcoming Batman sequel, The Dark Knight Rises. In an interview with E!, Bale said that he believes that this will be the last time he will be playing Batman. A statement which shouldn’t be too surprising. Bale is said to have signed on for just three movies back in 2003. MTV‘s Josh Horowitz, curious about Tom Hardy and the possible set of characters and baddies, asked the Welsh-born actor just how much he does know about the film.

Chris will let me know what I need to know when I need to know it. It’s our fourth movie together, and I probably know a little bit more than maybe some people out there, but I think most people will be surprised by how little I do know. It just hasn’t been necessary yet. I know he’ll give me plenty of time to prepare whatever I need to for it and I’ll discover it. He’s a pretty damn good filmmaker I trust that he’s going to come up with something wonderful.
- Christian Bale

Also speaking about The Dark Knight Rises, Michael Caine told Empire last week that Emma Thomas and Christoper Nolan told him to expect the script in January, to start shooting in May, and to finish shooting in November. Like Bale, Caine doesn’t seem to know much about the details of the plot or characters either, stating Nolan won’t tell him anything. Looks like we’ll just have to wait to find out more.

Nolan and Snyder Begin Looking for Superman

supermancast 3 Nolan and Snyder Begin Looking for Superman

Deadline has the exclusive on the casting search for upcoming Superman film, in which they claim producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder have begun to cast a “wide net” to find the next Man of Steel. He who will don the cape and tights could very well be an undiscovered actor, or relatively unknown TV star, according to the site. Nolan, Snyder, and the studio are likely looking at actors in the 28-32 age range and could possibly look at hundreds of potentials before picking their man. The buzz on current candidates point to Armie Hammer from The Social Network and Joe Manganiello of True Blood.

The other most important piece of information plucked from Deadline’s article is that the film will reportedly begin production in June 2011. Head over to Deadline to get the full scoop on the exclusive news. Also let us know who you would want to see as Superman in the comments below!

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Without The Riddler or 3D

tdkr1 The Dark Knight Rises Without The Riddler or 3D

Our buddy Geoff Boucher over at LA Times Hero Complex spoke with Christopher Nolan last night about the upcoming Batman film, which is now titled The Dark Knight Rises, and managed to get a few (and I mean a few) details out of him. One of said few details came when Chris told Geoff, “It won’t be the Riddler,” when talking about the film’s possible baddie line-up, eliminating the strongly rumored villain and the casting theories surrounding it. Chris also mentioned he managed to talk down Warner Bros. from throwing Batman on the 3D bandwagon to instead approach the film with other high definition technology, such as IMAX. Geoff tried to squeeze a few more juicy details out of the acclaimed director, but he was met with resistance.

Nolan plays things close to the vest — he’s one of the few filmmakers of his generation who actually does wear a vest — and he chuckled when I tried to get a few more details out of him. “Oh, you know me, I don’t talk.” He began our conversation by comparing it with a visit to the dentist’s office. Well, if so, he’s a patient who never opens wide. I asked if he could imagine a time when Warner Bros. would let a filmmaker shoot a Batman script where the villain isn’t one of the signature creations from the comic books. “Ah, Geoff Boucher, master of the leading question,” he said with a chuckle.

Keeping the focus on Bruce Wayne, the trilogy’s final installment will see many of the same characters return and have a few new ones pop-up. Head over to LA Times Hero Complex to get the full rundown on the interview, and stick tuned for updates soon. And congratulations to FilipeG for picking Oct. 27 in the Batman 3 Title Contest! You win a copy of Inceptionon Blu-ray!

Nolan Focuses on IMAX for The Dark Knight Rises

tdkr imax1 Nolan Focuses on IMAX for The Dark Knight Rises

Geoff Boucher has posted a new Hero Complex article that expands upon his interview with director Christopher Nolan from last night and focuses on the decision Nolan and team made to steer away from 3D and focus on IMAX for The Dark Knight Rises. Nolan tells Boucher that he wants the look and feel of the sequel to be “faithful” to the first two films in the series. “There was a large canvas and operatic sweep to The Dark Knight,” says Nolan, which is something he wants to carry through to the next film. The director has been apprehensive about 3D/stereoscopic imaging, citing image brightness and scale as his chief concerns. This is something he brings up again when to talking to Hero Complex, but this time using it the context of continuity with the previous films. But just because Nolan isn’t using 3D technology for this film doesn’t mean he isn’t going to push the envelope when it comes to filming the highly anticipated sequel.

The commitment to IMAX and high-definition cameras will allow Nolan to avoid the dim-image challenges that come with 3D. He said it will let him take the third film in the series into a new strata as far as image quality and the scale that can be achieved with that quality. ”We’re looking to do something technologically that’s never been done before,” Nolan said. “Our ambitions are to make a great movie.”

Could director Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Wally Pfister be planning on shooting large sections of the film on IMAX? I’m not sure, but it seems like they are definitely going to raise the bar after their work on The Dark Knight. Check out Geoff’s fantastic write up over at LA Times: Hero Complex for more info.

Darren Aronosfky Joins List of Potential Superman Directors

Darren Aronosfky Joins List of Potential Superman Directors

Another week, another possible director for The Man of Steel. The Los Angeles Times broke the news yesterday that Darren Aronosfky, the director of Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan, has met with Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas to potentially direct the upcoming Superman reboot. Joining a list that also includes Matt Reeves, Duncan Jones, Tony Scott, Jonathan Liebesman, and Zack Snyder, Aronofsky is by far the most impressive prospect yet. He brings a certain level of creativity and unpredictability to the project that films of this scale far too often lack. And while Superman may at first seem like a strange choice for someone so rooted in the independent sphere, this is same director once attached to projects like Batman: Year One, Watchmen, and RoboCop.

Most of you were in favor of Moon director Duncan Jones helming the project last week. Does Aronofsky’s inclusion in the mix change your opinion?

Christopher Nolan Confirms He Is Directing Batman 3

batman3 chris Christopher Nolan Confirms He Is Directing Batman 3

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise or shock to any of you, but who are we to not report that Empire recently got Christopher Nolan to confirm that he will be directing the next installment in the Batman franchise? Cause they did! Batman 3, for lack of a better title, is a bit of puzzle project when it comes to the details. It has not officially been green-lit by Warner Brothers, and yet it has a set release date of July 20, 2012. The project has only been mentioned officially as part of a larger outline of films by the studio, and Christopher Nolan has never actually admitted publicly that he would be directing it himself. That is until now. Empire‘s Dan Jolin tracked Nolan down and got the word straight from the horse’s mouth.

“It’s becoming inevitable, I’ll put it that way. I feel myself falling into it, I guess. And getting it all figured out and I’m pretty excited about what we’re doing so… If I haven’t announced it, I think that people probably all know at this point that I’m doing it.”
- Christopher Nolan

And just what are they doing? Well, Christopher’s brother, Jonah Nolan, recently finished a draft of the film’s script. Chris is now going over that draft and making notes, and possibly doing a draft himself. Now all we have to do is sit around and speculate, predict, and wonder (as per internet fanboy tradition) about just what team Nolan has in store for us. You can find out more about it all by reading Empire‘s exclusive on this news at EmpireOnline.com.

Behind The Stunning Visual Effects of Inception

snowfortressbts Behind The Stunning Visual Effects of Inception

FXGuide.com recently did a really nice feature on some of the visual effects in this summer’s most talked about film, Inception. They recorded an in-depth podcast with the vfx supervisor on Inception, Paul Franklin of the acclaimed visual effects house Double Negative. They also have a fascinating write up on the miniature effects featured in the film done by Ian Hunter and his team at New Deal Studios. Both Franklin and Hunter talk about the attention of detail in going into making this film’s visual effects as realistic as possible. Whether it be filming 1/6 scale miniatures at 72 frames per second, or coordinating with the costume department during the wire-work to help conceal gravity direction, both of the teams at New Deal Studios and Double Negative had their work cut out for them when it came to selling the visual effects in Inception.

Head over to FXGuide.com to learn more, and be sure to check out all of the awesome related photos in the full story. Thanks to 10thAvenger for posting this on the forums.

Christopher Nolan’s next project is “Inception”

Christopher Nolan has set up his next project with Warner Bros, an original screenplay he wrote called Inception. The filmmaker hopes to shoot the sci-fi action film in the summer for a release during summer 2010. Nolan will produce with partner Emma Thomas, who served as a producer on The Dark Knight. “Chris Nolan is a visionary filmmaker who continually raises the bar with each movie he makes,” Warner Bros Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov said. “We are thrilled to be collaborating again with him and Emma on this exciting new motion picture.” “Inception” is described as “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” This pushes back any potential filming on a new Batman film. Nolan has also long been attached to direct a big-screen adaptation of the British TV series “The Prisoner” for producer Scott Stuber at Universal.

Batman-on-Film claims three separate sources have informed them that Nolan’s recent deal with Warner Bros for his next film Inception includes an agreement for Nolan to do his third Batman film. IGN.com is also reporting that Nolan is the sole screenwriter currently attached to Batman 3. Seemingly neither Jonathan Nolan or David Goyer are officially involved yet. Dark Knight producer drops hints at third film?

As for the identity of the next round of Batman’s supervillains and love interests, Uslan remains tight-lipped. “It’s one of those deals where if I told you, I’d have to kill you,” he says with a chuckle.

Early this morning the nominees for the 81st annual Academy Awards were announced, and although The Dark Knight received nominations in 8 categories, it was absent in nearly all of the major ones. The Dark Knight Returns to Theaters this Friday

In December, Warner Bros officially announced that they will, in fact, re-release The Dark Knight to traditional cinemas as well as IMAX theaters in the United States on January 23, 2009. Already the 2nd Highest Grossing ($531 million) domestic film of all time, this move guarantees that it will become the fourth film to take in more than $1 billion in worldwide box office sales. According to Box Office Mojo, its current worldwide takings stand at $997 million.Insiders speculate the re-release is also an effort to increase its Oscar chances by keeping the film fresh in Academy members minds, since the film was released several months before the traditional ‘Oscar season.’ The Dark Knight has already won several prestigious awards, and has been nominated for many others, including 7 BAFTAS. Oscar nominations will be announced this Thursday, January 22.
